People often ask "what is wampum..?"  And while the origin of the word derives from the beads made from both the shell of the whelk and the quahog clam, it has recently come to stand more for the latter.

I took this shot to illustrate that the quahog clamshell frequently has beautiful bands of purple, which can then be worked down into beads and other jewelry.
