THE HERRING RUN
River Herring are anadromous fish, like salmon,
which spend the majority of their lives in salt water, but return to
the rivers and streams to spawn. Fish ladders (like this
one in Oak Bluffs, Ma.) enable herring to rest in pools as they climb
to the fresh water, and bypass roads, dams, and other obstructions to
their progress.
